Gas barrier properties of polylactide/cellulose nanocrystals nanocomposites

The development of polylactide (PLA)/cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) nanocomposites in the aim to increase gas barrier properties has been widely studied, but gave rise conflicting results. To better understand underlying transport mechanisms, PLA/CNC were produced at concentrations between 5 and 50 wt%. role interface for permeability was investigated using three different CNC surface grafts, namely lauric acid (slightly interacting with PLA), stearic (non-interacting poly glycidyl methacrylate bearing a reactive epoxy end-group (crosslinking PLA). While composites contained large number aggregates, homogenously dispersed obtained modified CNCs even high concentration (up 30 wt%). All had O2 CO2 than PLA. Surprisingly, prepared grafted did not perform ones neat CNC. diffusion coefficient successfully modeled Nielsen's law, showing importance shape factor resulting tortuosity performance notwithstanding compatibility. analysis dual-mode sorption isotherm showed creation similar quantity supplementary sites or PGMA grafts induced higher sites. most important advantage shielding against water vapor uptake. As result, could be maintained constant up 90% relative humidity.
